The Ritual Rug
The Ritual Rug is unlike any other yoga mat. It’s a patented design that’s a hybrid of a traditional yoga rug and a modern yoga mat, blending the aesthetic and tactile pleasure of woven natural fibers with the modern functionality and comfort of yoga mat foam.
Sustainabilty
We are committed to sustainability in sourcing and production, understanding the impact of our choices on the planet and society. The Ritual Rug is made from organic hemp, cotton, and non-toxic TPE foam.
Organic hemp is a soil-regenerating crop that requires around 50% less water to grow than conventional cotton and produces a durable fiber that is naturally anti-microbial and breathable. We travelled to Chine to source a hemp producer who is certified organic by Ecocert Greenlife, which has a rigorous system of vetting materials and processes for the highest environmental standards.
TPE foam is an environmentally-friendly yoga mat material that is created through non-toxic manufacturing processes to create a lightweight, buoyant surface. It is made up of 15% recycled material and can be recycled into new TPE products.
Ethically Handwoven
Each Ma rug is a masterpiece, handcrafted by skilled artisans. The Ritual Rug is ethically woven by hand in Northern India (the birthplace of yoga) by expert artisans. Our manufacturers are GoodWeave certified, ensuring no child labor, fair wages, a safe working environment, and environmental standards. They were chosen over hundreds of other manufacturers due our shared values around ethical and environmental compliance.
From the Founder
In 2013, I was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, doing my first yoga teacher training. It was 90 degrees with nearly 100% humidity, and I was sweating profusely. Every time I moved into downward dog, I found myself internally cursing my neon-purple, deteriorating yoga mat (not very yogi-like, I know) as my hands and feet kept slipping. My frustration was real, pulling me out of my practice. There had to be a better solution.
As an artist and designer, my mind couldn’t stop spinning with ideas to improve my predicament. Once back in Portland, OR, I enrolled in a weaving class and spent years developing a prototype that would eventually become The Ritual Rug—a versatile yoga mat combining natural fiber with yoga mat foam. Not only did I no longer need a towel in sweaty practices, it was light enough to take with me on all my travels, and was also reflected my values and tastes.
Sourcing sustainable raw materials on a larger scale led me China, where I discovered organic hemp and non-toxic yoga mat foam. To maintain the integrity of the loom-woven design I travelled to Northern India, the birthplace of yoga, to work directly with expert artisans. The Ritual Rug was developed from a dream for a yoga mat that I would love to practice on, everyday. I hope you have the same experience!
